Now we have skid loaders that are like having a Swiss Army Knife, as you can do so many different tasks with one piece of equipment. We use them for digging holes, pouring con- crete, moving materials around the job and stretching wire, which allows us to keep the projects moving along at a quicker pace. TL: Leif, other than installation and production tools and equipment, do you see any new trends in the fence industry? LG: I don't see a lot of new prod- uct trends in the industry at the mo- ment. We all handle the vinyl, orna- mental and chain link fence types. The trend that I would like to see is the development of our skilled in- stallers. With the labor shortage that we all are facing, I believe that we must do a better job of training our employees to build them up as a trade and not looked down upon as un- skilled laborers. We need to do this so that younger people will look at our trade and see that it is a trade that they can make a good living in. TL: What advice would you have for those who are considering getting into the business? LG: My advice to those who think that they want to get into the business is that you need to be ready for long hours for a good part of the year and that you are not going to just go out and start making a great living at first. You need to build up your repu- tation with the customers that you are serving, do high quality work on your jobs and not cut corners. There are too many fly-by-night fence contractors that pop up because they think that there is not much in- vestment or knowledge needed to get into business. If you are starting out, don't be the one contractor that is running behind other contractors telling the customer that you can do the job for less, when you do not know what your own costs are on the project. TL: What does your "crystal ball" say about the industry going into the future? LG: I feel that the future is look- ing very bright if we can find a way to attract skilled labor and keep them in our industry. If not, companies are going to have find ways to do more with equip- ment in the future". TL: Last but not least, are you glad you chose this profession and why? LG: Yes, I am glad that I chose this profession. I have been in the business for over 35 years and have worked in different parts of the indus- try. I worked for my father installing fence when I was younger and then had a chance to go to work for Master Halco for four years and see that side of the industry. During my time with Master Hal- co, I had a chance to see how different fence contractors ran their businesses. I learned a lot in those four years and saw some companies that were well run, as well as some companies that were not so well run. After leaving Master Halco, I went back and worked with my father before starting my own company. I used the knowledge that I gained while I was with Master Halco to run my business. We have always tried to think outside the box on how we do things and are always looking for new ways to run the company. Like the old saying goes, the only thing in life that is constant is change. If you are not changing or adapting in your business, then you are not mov- ing forward. This gives me a constant list of challenges that keep me inter- ested in the business."
