Sculptor and video artist Christy Gast's Self Portrait as the Barefoot Mailman—a tribute to the area's legendary barefoot mailman—recently debuted in Bal Harbour
Village as part of the community's Unscripted public art series. History has it that the mailman delivered mail between Palm Beach and Miami in the 1880s—before
major roads existed in South Florida—in his bare feet. The 12-foot-tall fiberglass creation is playful in nature—it's upside down, as if having landed head first after being
blown over by a strong wind. As part of her artistic process, Gast often costumes herself as the focal character in her works. Pictured here, Gast dressed up as the
mailman and used a laser scanned image to produce a somewhat female-inspired figure. A small-scale version of this installation will be available for purchase and
proceeds will be donated to future commissions . balharbourflorida.com/unscriptedartprojects
