Oil Heat
Cares
W
Keith Reid
e've covered National Association
of Oil and Energy Service Professionals' Oil Heat Cares regularly over the years, usually in the news
section. Sometimes that coverage has
involved highlighting a specific project,
and other times a fundraising event such
as the Care to Ride event held at the OESP
convention. For all of my appreciation of
the program, this is the first time I have
addressed it specifically.
The most recent project was spearheaded by Angel Gonzalez, New York City
Chapter, Petro-Maspeth. He decided that
it would be a good use of resources to take
on a Hurricane Sandy related project. In a
twist, the project this time did not focus on a
specific family in need (since, as OESP notes,
most families receive assistance from FEMA),
but the restoration of the heating system of
the Christ by the Sea Presbyterian Church.
Garden State, Fairfield County, NYC and
Long Island Chapters were there to install a
complete new system. Anthony Ayala, Fortis
Institute, Wayne, N.J. also volunteered along
with two of his students and his son, Justin.
As OESP notes in two days, a four zone
hydronic boiler, a 275 gallon oil tank and
approximately 300' of baseboard were

all installed. Supplies and materials were
donated by Peerless Boiler (boiler package);
Roth (Pex tubing and fittings); Petro (oil tank
and added labor); Taco (controls, valves and
circulators); Gil Meyerowitz, (a local supplier
who donated all the pipe and fittings to install
the boiler); Sippin Energy (pipe and fittings
and help with the oil tank); Blackman Supply
(baseboard); and Guaranteed Chimney for
work on the chimney.
As such Oil Heat Care projects go, this is
a fairly typical snapshot of the cooperation
and dedication put into the cause. It
can be too easy to look at the challenges
facing the industry or the coverage of the
occasional "bad apple" or the feedback
from customers who are upset over the
cost of a tank of oil and not appreciate the
outstanding quality of the folks that make
this industry their own.
And that quality is not artificial. Oil Heat
Cares and projects like this do provide a
wonderful public face for the industry, but I
would bet that no one who took part – from
the oil heat professionals to the manufacturers
– had to have much arm twisting done to get
on board. In fact, that willingness to be a
partner with the community is what sets the
industry apart from its utility competitors.
And, that focus on results and service is
what ultimately gives the companies in this
industry a solid base as they chart their paths
toward the future.
FON would like to apologize for omitting a photo
credit in the July Issue of the magazine. Fred Martel of
HVAC Insider provided the artwork for the coverage
of the OESP Show Review on page 8. Fred has helped
us out on a few occasions and we certainly regret the
omission.
