32 STiR coffee and tea | 2022 Issue 5 (October/November) T By Carrie Pallardy he Global Coffee Association (GCP) brings together stakeholders in the coffee industry with the mission of working toward a sustainable future. The mem- bership association aims to create a common set of sustainability goals and language for coffee producers, roasters, and retailers, as well as coffee industry associa- tions and governments. As a part of that mission, GCP releases reports on sustainable coffee purchases. The organization recently released the GCP Snapshot 2021, which highlights the sus- tainability efforts of eight major coffee roasters and retailers that are part of the project, including: Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), Peet's , Keurig Dr Pepper, Melitta Group, Nestl , Strauss Coffee, Supracaf , Tesco, and Westrock Coffee. GCP developed what it calls the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code and GCP Equivalence Mechanism, tools that provide a foundation for sustainability initiatives. The sustainability reference code is a framework for economic, social, and environ- mental sustainability in green coffee production. It is designed to help stakeholders throughout the coffee supply chain to define sustainability and evaluate and improve their sustainability practices. The Equivalence Mechanism allows sustainability standards defined by other groups to be assessed in comparison to the GCP's own Coffee Sustainability Refer- ence Code. Organizations can adopt a variety of sustainability second– or third-party schemes that meet criteria of the GCP Baseline Coffee Code. Second-party schemes include frameworks like Fairtrade and C.A.F.E Practices. Third-party schemes, such as Nes- presso's AAA Sustainability Quality Program and the sustainable production program LIFT by Mercon, involve oversight from an external body. The Global Coffee Platform Promotes 'Collective Reporting' to Guide Sustainability GCP's annual survey highlights progress and gaps The GCP has worked to make sustainability standards easier to compare across the many different frameworks and definitions used in the industry.
