Longtime colleagues and friends Eva Monheim and
Hal Rosner launched the weekly The Plant a Trillion
Trees Podcast as co-hosts in August of 2020. Eva
directs and produces the podcast, while Hal coor-
dinates its sponsorships. Both are entrepreneurs
based in greater Philadelphia. Eva is an educator and
the author of Shrubs & Hedges: Discover, Grow, and
Care for the World's Most Popular Plants; more than
100 articles and scholarly papers; and numerous
woody plant manuals. An ISA Certified Arborist,
she teaches Arboriculture and Woody Plants for
the Longwood Gardens Professional Horticulture
Program and is a co-principal of Verdant Earth
Educators, an environmental consulting firm.
Hal got started in tree care in high school when
he worked for his grandparents' business, The
Care of Trees. He's worked for the Pennsylvania
Horticultural Society's Philadelphia Green Program
and as chief arborist at the Morris Arboretum, where
he coordinated workshops for tree care profes-
sionals. An ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, Hal
has worked closely with institutional and residen-
tial clients on tree care, and as a NOFA Accredited
Organic Land Care Professional, he maintains a focus
minimizing pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
What was the impetus for the pod? "Michael Dirr
challenged me to take up his cause of planting a
trillion trees," Eva says. Hal remembered reading
that Dirr had written, "I wish the nursery industry
would hitch its wagon to the climate crisis." Eva and
Hal knew that between them and their extensive
professional networks, they could curate a unique
and valuable collection of conversations. Eva's son
Andrew is a sound engineer who helped her set
up the right equipment; he edits the podcast; and
he is a sponsor of the show. Eva's daughter Sarah
is a consultant and sometimes helps funnel inter-
esting guests and subject matter to the pod.
