A s I reviewed The Rancher before publication, the theme of teamwork became evident. Teamwork is easy to see in sports. Many sports require a team to accomplish the task, with each person playing a role in achieving a shared goal. I don't hear my nephews say, "I want to play baseball so I can hit the ball hard," or, "I love baseball because I get to run really fast." Those are simply parts of a much bigger picture. They enjoy being part of a team and doing their share so that everyone can succeed. You can't win a team sport by yourself. Sports can be a wonderful way to show young people the benefits of being part of a team—and to help them see their home and school lives in much the same way. When everyone is working together for the good of their home, family, classmates, or friends, life is easier and usually a lot more fun! Lorelei's story (page 12) is a wonderful example of that idea. Applying communication, collaboration, and teamwork in her daily life has made a difference for her at home in the cottage. It is exciting to think about how her school year may be impacted by the new social skills she has developed.
