S ometimes, our biggest fear is one we tell ourselves. We think we aren't good enough, or smart enough, or strong enough. We tell ourselves life is going to chew us up and spit us out. At the Youth Ranches, we want the kids we serve to understand their true value! Negative self-talk, as it is known in the mental health field, is often a result of an unsupportive environment rather than actual personal failings. When Talesha came to the Ranch, she wasn't sure she had what it took to be successful in the program. "I thought the program was more advanced than I could give," Talesha recalled. "I thought I wasn't smart enough to be here, and I wouldn't fit in." Part of this doubt in herself was a result of the environment Talesha came from. At home, she was tasked with carrying burdens no child should have to carry. "I had to take on adult responsibilities and actually go out and work and provide for my family as my mother and father did," Talesha said. The negative self-talk that Talesha carried to the Ranch was quickly challenged by positive affirmations from everyone in her life. It gradually began to shift something in her brain, showing Talesha her true capabilities. "I haven't been able to shift it by myself," Talesha said. "It has been my peers and my support system around me that helped me start seeing myself in a positive way."
