Which is exactly what happened. But in a strange twist of fate, it wasn't Dodge that came calling for Cummins to put the diesel V-8 in the next-generation Ram 1500s. It was Nissan. When Chrysler went bankrupt in 2009, Fiat bought the automaker, and in the reorganization the Dodge Ram moniker was replaced by the Ram Truck brand. There were also some contractual changes in the diesel department. Fiat stayed loyal to Cummins to continue supplying Ram HDs with the I-6, but decided to use their own VM Motori V-6 diesel for the next generation Ram 1500 pickups instead of Cummins' new V-8. Ram Trucks' loss was Nissan's win. Not only does the offering of a Cummins diesel V-8 in the next-generation Titans (and presumably the next-generation Armadas) give the automaker a powerful, fuel-efficient engine, the Cummins name will also attract loyal Cummins owners who want a half-ton pickup and engine that's built in America. Cummins ISV5.0, or more correctly the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, also paves the way for Nissan to move into the "heavy-duty" market, greatly expanding its pickup offerings. "Cummins ISV5.0 creates new opportunities for our OEM customers as a compact and lightweight [commercial] engine that delivers best-in-class fuel efficiency and total cost of ownership," says Dave Crompton, Cummins Vice President and General Manager - Engine Business. "Many of our customers have asked for a Cummins alternative for gasoline or other small displacement automotive diesel engines," says Crompton. "This [5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel] represents the next dimension in fuel economy and performance as Cummins continues to broaden our on-highway product line." Swapping the V-8 Turbo Diesel into the engine bays of pickups and full-size SUVs is one of the big attractions of Cummins V8. Its compact, 90-degree design allows it to easily fit where a comparable V8 or V10 gasoline engine was previously installed. Cummins' small-block V8 has an excellent power-to-weight ratio, too. It brings together a compacted graphite iron (CGI) cylinder block, forged steel crankshaft, high-strength aluminum alloy heads, and composite valve covers to offer maximum durability in a package that weighs about the same as a big-block V-8. These features, along with dual overhead camshafts and Cummins VGT Variable Geometry Turbocharger give this engine a very wide powerband with remarkable quietness and smoothness. Cummins says production of the commercial version, the ISV5.0, will be at the Columbus Engine Plant starting during the fourth quarter of 2014. The Nissan Titan version, the 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, will ramp up soon after to coincide with the production of 2015 Nissan Titans. This year-long wait will give Dodge Ram/Cummins loyalists plenty of time to ponder which they'd rather have under the hood of their next half-ton – a Fiat V-6 or a Cummins V-8. It'll also spur discussions of pickup brand loyalty and whether or not the determining purchase factor is the manufacturer of the truck – or the manufacturer of the engine. Production of the new engine will be in Cummins' Columbus, Ohio, manufacturing facility. Dual-overhead cam design and high rpm operating range of the V-8 diesel designed specifically for pickup and light commercial applications. propickupmag.com PROPICKUP 17
