rive through my town early on a weekday morning, and you will most
likely see a woman clad in a neon-yellow work vest walking along the
grass easement near the road. She sports a well kept head of grey hair, and
wields a sharp stick in one hand and a bag in the other. She does not work
for the village — or anyone else for that matter — but does more for our community
than most. She toils every morning, of her own volition, picking up the debris left behind
by those less considerate.
It is an example that more of us, myself included, need to take to heart. Luckily for
our industry, there are many who are making similar efforts to improve the landscape
around us.
On October 23, 2013, volunteers joined with the Professional Landcare Network
(PLANET) and donated their time and service to the city of Louisville for the third annual PLANET Gives Back. PLANET Gives Back promotes a positive impact for the
host city of PLANET's annual Green Industry Conference (GIC) and the Green Industry & Equipment Expo (GIE+EXPO).
This year, PLANET Gives Back turned its efforts to a new site — Home of the Innocents, a nonprofit shelter and pediatric convalescent center that provides services to
those facing severe crisis, including children who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned, medically fragile children, and those with autism. The afternoon was spent planting trees; cleaning up a butterfly garden, the playground and the general landscape; doing
irrigation-related projects; and planting cold crops in raised vegetable beds.
"We are pleased to continue our efforts in the downtown Louisville area for the third
year in a row, and especially thrilled to be working with the Home of the Innocents,"
said Alex Fransen, PLANET Gives Back project manager. "This is a great opportunity
for the PLANET members to give back to the city of Louisville, showcase their skills,
improve the environment, and help solidify partnerships within the community."
The Lead sponsors for PLANET Gives Back are GIE+EXPO, Bartlett Tree Experts,
Belgard Hardscapes, Blizzard Snowplows, CNA Business Insurance, Fisher Snowplows,
Include Software, Nature Safe, John Deere, and Western. The Supporting sponsors are
Stihl Inc. and Syngenta.
Kudos and thanks to all those who give back.
