City of London, Ontario Urban Forester Ivan Listar served as one of the conference moderators. With the USDA's Dudley Hartel, Dr. Theresa Crimmins of the National Phenology Network gave a very popular talk. Heather Reed interned with Tom Hoerth in Bath, Maine. Sacramento, California Urban Forester and Arborist Exchange Committee Chair Joe Benassini did a great job organizing the Silent Auction. I thought the conference was a lot of fun. It was a great opportunity to meet and talk to other professionals in my field of study. I'm excited to have another opportunity to attend a future SMA conference. —Mike Zalewski, SMA 2013 Intern As a first-time attendee to a SMA conference I finally realized how much I've been missing out. The conference presented a unique program specifically aimed at municipal arborists with plenty of useful lessons to share back home. I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet or renew friendships with my peers in municipal forestry and value the comradeship and support that it brings. —Brett OʼBrien, Natural Resources Supervisor, Columbia, Missouri Parks and Recreation Alex Estelmann was among the 2013 SMA Interns who helped with the Fun Run. Ifeel fortunate to have been able to attend this year's SMA conference. Having the SMA conference coordinated with the Partners in Community Forestry Conference was a nice way to extend the travel investment. It was a highlight to learn more about the research of Geoffrey Donovan. I have been reading and watching his work from afar, so it was a treat to hear from him in person. Meeting fellow municipal arborists was a significant benefit of attending the SMA conference for the first time. It was a good chance to put faces to foresters that I have met by phone and email, and also valuable to meet so many new natural resource managers who are working for the same goals I am but in different locations. Warning... I intend to follow up and learn from those of you I connected with. After a day of sitting while getting my head filled with good ideas and new connections, the Fun Run was a perfect way to get the blood flowing and meet even more good tree people. And finally, based on advice from multiple Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) alumni, I have added MFI to my list of professional development activities. I appreciate the recommendation and will be strategizing with my employer to determine the best timing for this investment in my growth. —Philip Potyondy, Sustainable Steve Walton interned with NYC Forester Danielle Gift. 22 Forestry Coordinator, Minneapolis, Minnesota Park & Recreation Board City Trees
