AARP FoundAtion EstAblishEs WintER REliEF Fund FoR oldER Adults suFFERing FRom thE sEvERE Cold WEAthER AARP Foundation has announced that it has established a relief fund to support older adults suffering from the severe cold weather that has gripped much of the nation. AARP and AARP Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar contribu- tions up to $250,000, which could mean up to $500,000 in aid. The matching pro- gram will be administered through AARP Foundation. "Many seniors who struggle with a limited income may face difficult choices in the weeks to come," said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, AARP Foundation president. For those older adults who are already liv- ing on the brink of survival, the increased heating costs and home repairs required to respond to this recent weather could push them over the edge – with months of winter still ahead. "AARP Foundation's efforts around winter relief offer AARP members and others who are concerned, a way to con- tribute." AARP Foundation will focus on states across the Northeast and Midwest and will work with the local AARP State offices to direct funds to organizations providing relief to the most in need. An immediate response to this urgent appeal will allow AARP Foundation to expedite support to those who need it now. To donate to the relief efforts, please go to: www.aarp.org/disasterrelief. APi outlinEs imPACt oF PRivAtE inFRAstRuCtuRE invEstmEnts on hEAting Costs: nAtuRAl gAs FoCus Recent cold weather spells have helped to underscore the importance of America's natural gas supply lines and ongoing infra- structure investments, API Chief Economist John Felmy told reporters on a January 16 conference call: "Reliable, affordable energy requires a 21st century system of transmission lines, pipelines, and energy infrastructure," said Felmy. "The recent cold snap provided a chilling reminder of what happens when demand approaches the limit of our current ability to bring abundant U.S. supplies to the regions that need it most. "A new study released last week by IHS shows that capital spending on oil and gas infrastructure increased by 60 percent between 2010 and 2013, thanks to America's shale energy revolution. With the right pol- icy choices, these investments will accelerate, providing a major boost to the economy, creating jobs, and strengthening the supply chain to consumers. "In total, IHS anticipates up to $1.15 tril- lion in oil and gas infrastructure investments over the next 12 years, contributing as much as $120.58 billion to U.S. GDP; supporting as many as 1.15 million jobs; and providing an additional $27.45 billion in government revenues on average, annually between 2014 and 2025. These are private dollars – not public funds – ready to put shovels in the ground. "Public officials are taking notice too. President Obama recently announced a new Quadrennial Energy Review of transmis- sion and distribution infrastructure. Our message is simple: let's recognize the value of investing in our energy transportation network and work together to streamline the regulatory and permitting process, so that small delays don't potentially add up to huge costs for consumers across country."
