Rethinking Pavement Now in its second year of production use, the city of Houston Pavement Condition Collection and Visualization solution is generating buzz around the state and nation, and city officials have discussed the possibility of a second van to study flood drainage. Other cities are inquiring about the solution as they rethink the paradigm of “outsource it all” vs. “do it manually ourselves.” “We have seen a great return on our investment
in this solution,” says Shah. “We gather data much more consistently and efficiently. We are safer on the roads. We can make better decisions about which roads we treat given the yearly street-maintenance funds available. And ultimately, we are serving our constituents, the citizens of Houston, much better. That’s what’s most important.”

lA Web-based data visualization tool allows users to quickly identify street condition by color on a Bing Maps interface. Users then
can “drill down” to see specifics and 360-degree videos of street segments in question.
