April 2014 | brAvAmAgAzine.com 13 arts PrevieW The arts are magical for the way they spark meaningful conversations about important social issues. This month brings several opportunities to dig deep into criminal justice. The madison opera performs Jake heggie's, "Dead Man Walking" (based on the book by Sister helen prejean). performed to rave reviews nationally, there isn't an opera more suited to madison's willing audiences, who are so open to exploring complex ideas and emotions. Though it's centered on the controversial death penalty, Kathryn Smith, general director of the madison opera, emphasizes that "dead man Walking" is far from didactic. in fact, part of the story's beauty is in its balance. musically we'll be in the good hands of John demain, who has conducted this American opera many times, including for the new york city production that fi rst captivated Smith in 2002.
