WELCOME NOTE Welcome to Cultured. In putting together this edition, we have had countless meetings with the talented Design Miami/ team, we have visited many of the participating galleries and talked with numerous enthusiastic designers and top cura- tors in attempts to reflect this moment in design. For our cover, we were inspired by the Spanish designer Nacho Carbonell’s latest series of sea creature-inspired lamps; Monica Khemsurov took us in- side his studio for an all-access look at the designer’s sometimes-sponta- neous process. Architect Peter Marino—who has created flagship stores for more luxury brands than you can probably rattle off the top of your head, and residences for some of the world’s most notable art and design collec- tors—took a moment out of his frenetic schedule to talk to Cultured about mixing styles and periods, the dreaded decorative artist label and how fairs showcase the art of the minute and concretize trends. The elusive Ricky Clifton, who has designed spaces for the likes of John Currin and Agyness Deyn, had a Japanese coffee with Alexandra Szucs Cunningham, Design Miami/’s director of exhibitions, and shared with us his one-of-a-kind curtain made out of found bottle caps. Tali Jaffe gets intimate with the galleries in “Best in Show” and also speaks to the gallerists and designers presenting their most current work at Design On/Site. W Hotels once again anoints the Designers of the Future who will all unveil provoking new works this week exploring the theme, conversation pieces. Read more about this talented group in “Forward Thinking.” This June is also the first fair under the direction of Marianne Goebl. Cul- tured talked with the new director about her thoughts on how the “exper- iment of today becomes the classic of tomorrow,” Goebl continues, “Design Miami/ is the only fair to present its visitors with a journey through the entire design history: from rare historic gems to the latest contempo- rary experiments.” A preview of which we bring you in these pages. See you in Basel. Sarah G. Harrelson Editor in Chief Sarah Harrelson and Carlos Suarez Carlos A. Suarez Creative Director 22 CULTURED SETH BROWARNIK
