SoloShow Galerie Caroline Van Hoek presents Beatrice Brovia and Nicolas Cheng For the “Conversation Piece” brief, the aim was to cross- breed different languages and tools, in order to create a se- ries of objects to be referred to as “conversation pieces.” For this installment, Façades, we focused on jewelry, creating pieces that have very sculptural qualities. We see jewelry as a meaningful language or code of expression, open for investi- gations. It is never just adornment. Once worn on the body, jewelry can reach out for wider audiences: it is carried with the wearer to different places, exposed to diverse viewers. It has a “portable” nature that we don’t find as strong in furni- ture, for example.—Nicolas Cheng A sketch of one of the sculptural jewelry pieces for Beatrice Brovia’s and Nicolas Cheng’s Façades. Astrid Krogh “I discovered Astrid Krogh’s work while I was doing research for the opening of my Parisian gallery in 2010. Discovering little by little the emergence of a new Scandinavian scene with a mul- titude of new expressions, I realized that it was time to give this new generation a space and to defend its cause on an in- ternational level. There is something very fresh and poetic to Danish contemporary design that I have seen nowhere else so far, and to which I feel closely connected on a personal level. “I have always had a soft spot for art and design dealing with light and space, and I was immediately attracted to the strange poetry of Astrid’s work with its surprising mix of high-tech ma- terials and traditional crafts techniques. I had never seen any- thing like it, these light tapestries are spiritual and sensual, emotional and thought provoking, immaterial and luxurious at the same time. To weave with light itself opens up radically new possibilities for interior design.”—Maria Wettegren Maria Wettegren presents Astrid Krogh’s Lightmail Cumulus Studios presents Mike Bouchet “Bouchet’s solo project for Design Miami/Basel embodies the perfect balance between his artistic practice and Cumulus Studios’ mission. The use of mass-produced visuals of pop culture in his work, translated into a fresh and ironical outdoor functional object. Bouchet, like all of the artists collaborating with Cumulus Studios, has proved that it’s possible to cross the boundaries of contemporary vi- sual art and still be true to himself as an artist.”—Nathalie Karg Designer Mike Bouchet working on Argento Libre-Dario. 78 CULTURED
