T rucks work hard for Champion Technologies, the Houston- headquartered specialty chemical company provid- ing production solutions for the oil and gas industry. But you sure wouldn't know their workload by their odometers. A typical work day might see one of their Peterbilt medium-duty or heavy-duty trucks run up to 12 hours almost non- stop — and put on less than 200 miles. Unlike their on-highway brethren, these trucks rarely have interstate high- way under their wheels. Rather, they travel many of their miles on rutted dirt and gravel back roads that wind through swamp and woodland on their way to the remote gas wells they ser- vice. Once there, the real work starts, as the trucks are then used to power the heavy-duty pumps that drive the variety of chemical solutions — carried into the site by the barrel-load on the beds of these trucks — into the customer wells, where they clean, lubricate and optimize production. "What we do for a working gas well is something similar to what regular pre- ventive maintenance does for a Peterbilt — it keeps it operating at peak pro- ductivity," says Bob Parham, a region- al operations manager for Champion Technologies. "But to get in there and get done what we get paid to do, that's some severe duty for these trucks." It's the type of duty Champion Technologies' Peterbilts perform in all the major gas and oil production areas in North America. North American operations are divided into 18 production districts, each of which is served by a centrally located terminal. The facility located in Frierson, La., is typical. There, Greg McGuffee oversees the daily operations of 13 Peterbilt trucks. Located in the approximate center of the gas production district they service, Frierson-based operations will service wells located as far as 90 miles away.
