Unlike private pay retirement homes, application to a long term care home must be made through your local Community Care Access Centre or CCAC. Eligibility for placement is determined by CCAC staff after an assessment of your needs. Because there are usually waiting lists, your choices may be limited, at least initially. CCAC placement staff can explain the entire process and provide you with information, advice, and application forms. See page 89 for more information about CCAC. RESOURCES DETERMINING the financial resources of the individual is an important part of the process. You'll need to consider what level of savings and investments are available. You may qualify for government funded home health care services, such that your cost is usually nominal to nil. Check with making the right choice your local CCAC. Most times the cost of living in a private pay residence can equate to the current cost of maintaining your owned home, since everything is included - meals, housekeeping and maintenance, social activities and fitness. If you need long term care, the Ministry pays for the programs and services and the resident is responsible for paying the cost of accommodation and meals at rates that are set annually by the Ministry.
