Continuing Education Special Advertising Section Higher Education in a Diffi cult Economy By Alan Capelle Everyone in the Madison metro area is acutely aware of the chal- lenging economic times we currently face locally and across the nation. In light of the statewide and national focus on jobs and growth, there is no better time than the present to consider return- ing to a university for a degree, certifi cate or specifi c courses. Those folks who have positioned themselves to enhance their technical or liberal arts education will have an advantage in the marketplace whenever that sector improves. When shopping around for a suitable college or university to attend, you may want to consider the following items: 1. Does the institution place a high premium on student learning as evidenced by its ‘non-profi t’ status? 2. Is the institution fully accredited by the Higher Learning Com- mission and a member of the North Central Association? 3. Is the culture of the institution student-friendly, focused on learning and overall student success? 4. Are there suffi cient support services in place such as advising, fi nancial aid, orientation sessions, career development and tutoring? 5. Is the curriculum diverse and evolving to meet student needs? 6. Are the faculty experienced, inspiring, and committed to student learning and success? Do they go the extra mile to help students with their needs? 7. Are the various courses of suffi cient length (i.e. equivalent to a semester status) to promote adequate learning so that students can hit the ground running once they become employed or re- employed? 8. Does the institution have certifi cates available to assist employ- ees with additional learning for a changing workplace even after they attained their baccalaureate or graduate degrees? Do they have a strong and vibrant alumni network? To help you get an edge in today’s economy, I recommend seri- ously considering some measure of ‘re-tooling’ your knowledge and skills. Further higher education coursework in whatever form will put you in a better position to fi nd the right job in the rebound- ing economy and your overall career path.
