TOP OF THE NEWS to tribal members would be preserved. Jim Calvin, president of the New York Association of Convenience Stores, hailed the court ruling and urged Gov. Andrew Cuomo to immediately begin tax col- lection, as he has pledged to do. Sales of cigarettes in tax-collecting stores have plummeted over the last 10 years as a series of state excise tax hike increas- es drove more and more non-Indian smokers into the arms of tribal com- petitors who enjoyed a dramatic and artificial price advantage because they excluded over $5.00 a pack in state taxes. “It is conceivable that the Senecas will appeal this ruling, commence some new legal action, or try some other maneuver to prevent the State from moving forward with enforcement,” Calvin said, “but ulti- mately the law is the law, and the State has the right to collect these taxes.” INDUSTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS n Kubat Equipment partners with PDQ Manufacturing as equipment distributor for Colorado and Wyoming PDQ Manufacturing, Inc. To kick off the Shell Smarter Driving program, John and Helen Taylor, known as the world’s most fuel efficient couple, holding 88 world records, will embark from Los Angeles, Calif., on a national fuel efficiency tour. As the current world record hold- ers for a similar drive in 2008 using Shell Diesel, the Taylors and Shell are teaming up once again to set another lowest fuel consumption record while driving exclusively with Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines along their route. They will also make several stops along the way to share their experiences and tips on how to be smarter drivers.
