Mark Boyer of Fishertown, Pennsylva- nia, joined the executive committee. Diane Smith with the Michigan Apple Com- mittee replaced Todd Fryhover of the Wash- ington Apple Commission as this year's state association board member. Scientists join Summerland Varieties Corporation board Two retired Agriculture and Agri-foods Canada scientists have been appointed to the board of the Summerland Varieties Corpora- tion (previously known as the Okanagan Plant Improvement Company, or PICO). They are former cherry breeder Dr. Frank Kappel and horticulturist Dr. Norman Looney. SVC, which is owned by the British Colum- bia Fruit Growers' Association, administers technical, legal, and contractual matters for owners of new tree fruit and berry varieties and operates a budwood orchard that provides growers with virus-indexed wood for grafting. East Malling appoints French researcher East Malling Research in Kent, England, has appointed physiologist Dr. Julien Lecourt to lead research into optimizing efficiency, yields, and postharvest quality in temperate tree fruit production. Lecourt was previously at INRA (the National Institute for Agricul- tural Research) in Bordeaux, France, where he worked on a range of perennial crops. Lecourt holds a bachelor's degree in biol- ogy and a master's degree in molecular biol- ogy and biotechnology from the University of Normandy, France. He earned his doctorate in plant biology from the University of Bordeaux Segalen, France. Dr. Mark Else, program leader at East Malling, said this is an important posi- tion for the U.K. fruit industry as scientists work to improve yields and consistency of fruit production. Lecourt's expertise will help steer East Malling's work on traditional and novel fruit crops. Online cherry promotion earns campaign of the year honor Northwest Cherry Growers and two Chinese online retailers, Fruitday and Tmall, have received Asia Fruit Logistica's Marketing Campaign of the Year Award for their joint promotion of Northwest cherries last season. Consumers ordered cherries via Tmall's online platform and received them within 48 to 72 hours. Around 200 tons of cherries were sold. Asia Fruit Logistica described it as a watershed promotion in underlining the potential of e-commerce as a direct-to- consumer sales channel for fresh fruit and directly accessing young consumers who have the means and motivation to buy high-value imported fruit.
