CULTURED 85 WHEN IN A JAM, sometimes it's best to start fresh—which is exactly the path taken by the curatorial staff and board members of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. Just in time for Art Basel, the museum swings open its new doors as the Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District's Moore Building. "Admission is free, removing any economic barriers to experiencing art," says Suzanne Weaver, the museum's interim director, who continues to lead alongside deputy director and chief curator, Alex Gartenfeld. Inaugurating the programming are shows of Pedro Reyes and Andra Ursuta, which speak to ICA's distinct mission of being, as Weaver says, "an important resource for the discovery and advancement of the highest quality of new art." icamiami.org 23 There's a new kid on the biennial block. Debuting in October, the Chicago Architecture Biennial will feature works by established architects as well as up-and-coming talent, under the co-direction of Joseph Grima and the Graham Foundation's Sarah Herda. It also boasts an advisory board that includes Frank Gehry, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and David Adjaye, whose work will be the subject of an upcoming retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago. chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org SAY Y.ES Sam Keller, Marc Spiegler, Zelika Garcia, Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, Christy Turlington Burns and Amy Cappellazzo are just a handful of the 30 art influencers who participate in "Y.ES," a new book published by the Robert S. Wennett and Mario Cader-Frech Foundation that examines contemporary art in El Salvador. Over the last 10 years, El Salvador has found a footing through its artists' activities, particularly through the establishment of MARTE Contemporary at the Art Museum of El Salvador. Launching during Art Basel Miami Beach, "Y.ES" draws on an extensive network of artists, curators, gallerists, museum directors, collectors and critics who contribute their perspectives of contemporary art in and of the country. —Soledad Picon yescollectcontemporary.com 24 25 Iwan Baan captures Chicago Andra Ursuta's Soft Power, 2013 A MIGHTY WIND COURTESY THE ROBERT S.
