96 CULTURED Prior to her appointment as director of Glasgow International (which took place in April), Sarah McCrory served as the curator of Frieze Projects from 2010 to 2013. She has been credited with championing emerging talent and for commissioning projects for Frieze Art Fair, including new public art in East London. McCrory worked in commercial galleries and nonprofit organizations before helming Studio Voltaire in South London. The sixth edition of Glasgow International included a solo show of New York artist Anne Collier; a pop-up nail bar where patrons enjoyed Alistair Frost's work on the walls and their nails; and the first retrospective of Palestinian artist Khaled Hourani. McCrory is also the director of Monteverdi Gallery in Italy and runs its residency program. SARAH MCCRORY Director, Glasgow International "I RECENTLY CAME BACK FROM SÃO PAULO, where I went to see Charles Esche's biennial. I was particularly interested in a painting by Bruno Pacheco I saw there. "THIS SEASON, I HAVE Mark Leckey's show at Wiels museum in Brussels on my list. He is, in my opinion, pretty much the best artist working now." "I LOVE SEEING SHOWS A SECOND TIME AROUND. I'm going to see Matisse's "The Cut-Outs" at MoMA in New York, which I saw at Tate earlier this year. Similarly, but in reverse, Sigmar Polke is at Tate Modern, which I saw at MoMA! It's a treat to catch a show in a new configuration." "IF I WAS STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND, I'd take a large Franz West sculpture, maybe Gekröse. It'd brighten up the beach and it's pretty weatherproof, so if I got desperate, it'd make a great shelter." MATISSE / ARTISTS RIGHTS SOCIETY (ARS), NEW YORK (MATISSE) Matisse's Le Clown, 1947 "I HAVE THE LUXURY of working at Monteverdi, a beautiful villa and hotel in Tuscany overlooking the Val d'Orcia. I run a gallery and the unique artist and scholars in residence program there. Every time I go it surprises me." Monteverdi, Tuscany Bruno Pacheco's Meeting Point, 2011 Installation view of "Mark Leckey: Lending Enchantment to Vulgar Materials."
