"On one hand the demand for high output capacity machines is de- veloping proportional to the growth of the market. On the other hand the di- versification of the product range leads to a growing request for more flexible machines enabling faster changeovers," he said. "To convince a consumer to decide on your brewing system you must offer high-volume mainstream products like a breakfast blend coffee as well as niche products like latte macchiato and hot chocolate for the kids," explains Erb. "Higher output means reduced cost per product for big batches," said Erb. "But for smaller batches a flexible ma- chine with minimal down time between production runs is the better choice. This can be achieved by improved machine ac- cess through the use of pull-out modules and easy-to-clean components," he said. Machine output ranges from 200 up to 1,500 capsules or pads per minute. "Optima covers this range and also offers equipment with even higher flex- ibility at a lower output for research and development labs involved in new prod- uct development," he said. Marius Olszewski, v.p. sales at Swiss- based Rychiger AG said his company offers three different filling and sealing platforms "giving our customers a choice of output matching their manufacturing scale." "We are currently building equipment to produce filter cups with output rang- ing from 110 cups/min. up to 1200 cpm, A strip of coffee pods going into the die cutter to make individual pods before pouch overwrapping in nitrogen flush.
