Your competent Your competent Hall A04 - Booth N° 213 Woodshed Roasting Company in Laconia, New Hampshire, is using its blog to describe how the new regulations might affect their next cup of coffee. One informa- tive post concluded that FSMA would result in a higher commodity prices, but a better and safer product overall. Woodshed imports only the premium 20% of the crop which is Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, and Organic certified as well as shade grown, and bird friendly. The site is full of great educational tips on sustainable growing, but the specifics of their operations and their supply chain aren't part of the reading. Another exemplary company is North Carolina's Counter Culture Coffee. Anyone with an internet connection can log on to their site and read in detail how the company follows through on their commitment to sustainability, carbon neutrality and social responsibility. In another section of the site surfers can find Counter Culture's CO 2 Report, Sustainability Scorecard, and their Transparency Reports which give a succinct summary of the company's financial and personal relationships with all the producer partners whose coffees received Counter Culture Direct Trade Certifica- tion in the previous year. "Of all of the principles that we aimed to codify when we created Counter Culture Direct Trade Certification, transparency is the one that has meant the most to how we conduct our business," said Kim Elena Ionescu, the company's coffee buyer and sustainability manager. "Transparency has encouraged us to think not only about the price that we pay for coffee, but about how that price reaches farmers and farmworkers. Because the concept of transparency often requires time and finesse to achieve, we have chosen suppliers more carefully and invested more in relationships in order to achieve and maintain it." These companies have created a template for the whole industry whether green coffee is exempted or not. The economic, environmental and social benefits they have achieved will lead others to adopt these strategies. Above, Counter Culture Coffee's Brett Smith instituted a model program for coffee quality and safety that enforces transparency along the entire length of the supply chain.
