Awakening to quality As recently as five years ago, the artisinal coffee scene in Germany was practi- cally nonexistant. That's when Café CK opened their doors and began offering light-roast filter coffee. Cory Andreen, co-owner of the Berlin coffee shop, missed the filter coffee he was accus- tomed to in the U.S. and so he worked closely with Berlin roaster Bonanza to develop filter coffee roasts for his venue. No Fire, No Glory, also opened in 2009. Berlit said the early days were "a bit of a venture." Customers were not accustomed to the nuances. Each order required a detailed conversation. Berlit was committed to developing a demand for quality coffee and so he invested the time explaining the lighter roast to an audience accustomed to gro- cery store brands. "It was completely new to them to drink the espresso and think about what they were actually tasting and what they smelled, and that espresso can taste totally different from bean to bean," said Berlit. Maintaining the highest quality from crop to cup requires a blend of technology and know-how that only years of experience and innovation can provide. And no one knows this better than GEA Process Engi- neering - the company behind the world- recognised GEA Niro instant coffee plants. We have fine-tuned the process to ensure excellence at every stage – from the green beans to drying and packing – so you have the flexibility to supply specific markets with specific products.
