Following poor tea prices last year when farmers did not reduce production as advised, EATTA has set up a live relay of the Mombasa auctions to increase efficiency and transparency ahead of the introduction of electronic auctions expected to be introduced in April next year. The new system will provide instantaneous data visualization and analysis, automated data warehousing and historical achieving, quick and efficient post-auction recon- ciliation, and world-class auction floor operations. In June this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta called for the fast tracking of an electronic tea auction in Mombasa through a public-private partnership to improve transparency and efficiency. At the moment, the live transaction is only offered through CFC Stanbic Bank but EATTA is also finalizing the integration of Equity and Citi banks to the tea sales payment system that was introduced in 2010. Kenya will be the second country after India to introduce online auctions. MALAWI Satemwa Specialty Tea in US Following its success at World Tea Expo in Long Beach in May this year, with its orthodox specialty teas, Satemwa Tea Estates, a small family-owned estate in the Shire Highlands, has set up a small tea stock in New Jersey. This means that both large and small American and Canadian customers can now order the company's specialty teas without having to worry about import paper- work and long transport times. It allows direct trade with the estate but the teas are delivered in a couple of days within the US. The stock is still small but Satemwa is building up the range based on what America customers are saying and ordering. As well as its traditional black teas, the company also makes 'White Antler' tea using just the stalks, a white 'Broken Silver Peony', hand-rolled white 'Zomba Pearls', and 'Bvumbwe Hand Made Treasure', a lightly oxidized black tea. Satemwa is also working in close collaboration with Msu- wadzi Smallholders, a group of 200 enthusiastic tea farmers who are willing to produce and add value to their green leaf. Satemwa will help them get some exclusive high quality small- holder tea into the market and the final product is expected to appear in mid-2015.
