Dress Codes: Decoded Need help deciphering the wardrobe cues on your party invitations? Avoid a fashion faux pas with quick tips from wardrobe consultant and stylist Bonnie Raimy White tie = Get fit for the queen This is the pinnacle of high-style dress and it is not optional. For men, the descrip- tion calls for a proper tuxedo with a dinner jacket that has tails and a bow tie. Women should wear a long gown and gloves. Black tie = Dress your best Think fancy, but note the time of the par- ty. If it's during earlier hours, women can often get away with a cocktail dress (or a sleek suit, if dresses aren't your thing) while men can sport their finest slacks and a button-up shirt. But if it's an evening affair, err on the side of caution and go with a long gown or proper tux. Black Tie Optional = Go cocktail If given a little wiggle room, feel free to ar- rive in a swanky cocktail dress or nice suit rather than a long gown and tux. Cocktail = The freedom to show a little leg Cocktail parties are usually the perfect venue to wear a shorter dress (it doesn't have to be above the knee—just avoid floor-length gowns). If you'd rather keep your gams covered, go for a snazzy, glit- tery top paired with a wool pant. Men, meanwhile, should reach for slacks and a stylish top. Though denim is not usu- ally recommended for cocktail affairs, you might get away with it if paired with a nice jacket and shoes. Business casual = No "casual Friday" wear The intention with this kind of event is that you can show up after work, so it is typically not expected that you wear your finest duds. Instead, follow the culture of your workplace. If you're an office dwell- er, let this be the day you wear your dress- ier outfit like a chic sweater and blouse or a stylish suit. But if the party is later in the evening, you might want to head home to change into something fancier. Casual = (Almost) anything goes Though you should feel free to slip on your favorite jeans or dress-and-boots combo, make sure you don't get too cozy and arrive in workout clothes.
