The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. A SPEED LIMITER mandate proposal for all trucks weighing more than 27,000 pounds was sent May 19 to the White House Office of Management and Budget. The proposed governed speed will not be made public until the proposed joint rulemak- ing by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is published in the Federal Register, set for Aug. 27. A MANDATE FOR putting elec- tronic stability control systems in new trucks was cleared last month by the White House Office of Management and Budget and will take effect two years following its publication in the Federal Register, which is likely in the coming weeks. DAIMLER TRUCKS North Amer- ica said it will not exhibit at the 2016 Mid-America Trucking Show and plans to attend the show every other year starting in 2017. The Louisville, Ky.-based show will remain an annual event, said Toby Young, MATS manager. DRAGAN SIMOVSKI, opera- tor of Illinois-based Freedom Transportation, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Chicago to three years in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty last December to wire fraud and mail fraud. Simovski also was ordered to pay $532,000 in restitution in connection with an illegal double-brokering scheme where he and a co-conspirator broker arranged for Freedom to use its own nonexistent trucks to transport freight, then worked with another carrier to haul the goods without compensating them. He was charged in April 2013. THE TAKATA airbag recall affects nearly 34 million vehicles from 11 companies, including the brands Freightliner, Western Star and Sterling. Takata driver and passen- ger airbag inflators manufactured between April 2000 and vehicle model year 2008 are included in the recall.
