New partner for wine event T he Washington Wine Commission has licensed Seattle's Convention and Visitors Bureau to produce Taste Washington, the largest single-region wine and food event in the nation. The commission will shift to be a pre- senting sponsor, with the Visitors Bureau assuming responsibility for producing the event, obtaining spon- sorships and vendor arrangements. The commission will manage winery participation and other wine-related activities. Wine Commission Chair and Sagemoor Vineyard General Manager Kent Waliser said in a news release, "Over 14 years, Taste Washington has grown to become the premier showcase for the Washington wine industry in the Pacific Northwest. This new partnership will enable Taste Washington to continue to grow into a destination wine and food event on a national level." Changes to the format include a two-day grand tast- ing, March 31 and April 1, 2012, at CenturyLink Field Cen- ter in Seattle. Taste Washington seminars will be held at CenturyLink on March 31, with separate tickets required. Ticket packages—grand tasting, seminars, and lodging— will be available for the first time. Walmart donates $25,000 T he Walmart Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Washington Apple Education Foundation to support its scholarship training program. The award was presented during the Cherry Institute meeting in Yakima in January. The Apple Education Foundation works with high school students in Washington's tree-fruit districts to help them secure scholarships for higher education. This is particularly important to those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.The Apple Founda- tion itself awarded $425,000 in scholarships to 151 students in 2011. The Walmart Foundation supports traditionally underserved groups and recently distributed more than $600,000 to organizations in Washington State, including the grant to the Apple Foundation. Walmart purchased around 400 million pounds of apples, pears, and cherries from Washington producers in 2011.
