on Jan. 3, stem in part from the company being locked into coffee contracts reached when coffee prices were peaking last fall. Prices have dropped since then, leaving Starbucks stuck with paying above- market rates for some of its supplies, reports the Wall Street Journal. The increases will increase the price of a "tall" (12-oz.) coffee by 10 cents, to $1.85, in New York City. The price of packaged coffee, in both Starbucks shops and grocery and other retail outlets, will remain unchanged. Sara Lee completes coff ee sale to Smucker Move precedes spinoff of international coffee unit Sara Lee has completed the sale of its North American coffee unit to J.M. Smucker Co. for a total of $850 million, in a deal that was announced in October. The sale means that Smucker will add Douwe Egberts, Cafitesse and Pickwick to a coffee portfolio that already includes Folgers, Kava and other brands. The deal comprises an upfront payment of $350 million and annual payments of $50 million for 10 years. Sara Lee's selloff of its domestic coffee unit precedes the spinoff of its international coffee and tea business, set to occur this spring. In advance of that spinoff, Sara Lee announced on Jan. 3 its acquisition a high-end specialty tea company. Tea Forté, based in Concord, Mass., was founded in 2003 and posted revenues of $12 million last year. Its products are sold in hotels, restaurants and luxury retailers in 35 countries. Sara Lee plans to integrate Tea Forté into its new spinoff, which is using the generic label CoffeeTeaCo until its permanent name is announced. It already has tabbed former Heineken executive Michiel Herkemij as the new company's CEO. The Tea Forté acquisition follows Sara Lee's purchase of Norwegian roaster/packager House of Coffee in November. Caribou now 100% Rainforest Alliance-certifi ed First major chain to reach all-RA status Caribou Coffee, the second biggest specialty coffee retail chain in America, has become the first major coffee player to source all of its beans from farms certified by the Rainforest Alliance (RA). Caribou, which has been working with RA since 2003, announced last April the goal of sourcing all its espresso and other coffee from RA-certified farms. To meet this objective, Caribou Coffee worked directly with coffee farmers in North and South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. "Partnering with Rainforest Alliance was an easy decision for us," says Chad Trewick, senior director of coffee and tea at Caribou Coffee. "We believe they are the most comprehensive sustainable certification that an organization can obtain."
