The captivating Chinese art and design dealer Pearl Lam hardly needs an introduction. She's been at the forefront of the contemporary design market, championing young artists like Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey and Martin Szekely, for nearly two decades and is perhaps as well known for her elaborate dinner parties as her groundbreaking exhibitions. More than 15 years after beginning her career in Hong Kong with her first art and design gallery in 1993, Lam returns to the sprawling metropolis to open her latest outpost of Pearl Lam Galleries. "I am returning to my home, where I grew up and where I first started my business," says Lam. "I want to develop a dynamic and distinctive gallery pro- 36 CULTURED gram that showcases international, Asian and local artists." For her inaugural show, Lam featured an exhibition of Chinese contempo- rary abstract painting featuring works by eight leading Chinese abstract artists of different generations: Li Xiaojing, Qin Yufen, Qiu Zhenzhong, Zhu Jinshi, Yan Binghui, Su Xiaobai, Zhang Jianjun and Li Huasheng. "Since Art HK's first edition four years ago, Hong Kong has been gradually transforming into a contemporary art center to rival London and New York," Lam says. "I am elated by these changes and want to contribute to this continuing transformation."
