In This Issue: Contributors Susan Downing Day is an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech who studies tree-soil interactions and their role in urban soil quality and stormwater mitigation. Her contributions helped shape the standards for sustainable soil management in the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES). She holds a B.A. from Yale University, an M.S. from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. Research in Soil Profile Rebuilding has been funded in part by the Tree Research and Education and Endowment Fund as well as the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science at Virginia Tech. Michelle Sutton (michellejudysutton. com) has been Editor of City Trees since 2005. She also edits the blog and e-news for the New York State Urban Forestry Council and writes articles about urban forestry and horticulture for a variety of publications. She has a Master's Degree in Urban Horticulture from Cornell University and a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture from Virginia Tech. Michelle Sutton 10 City Trees Ian Hanou is the Founder and Owner of Plan-It Geo (www.planit- geo.com), a geospatial analysis and software development firm in Colorado focusing on urban forestry and natural resources planning and technology. Ian has managed more than 150 projects relating to GIS, forestry, planning, software, and related technologies. In September 2011, the Society of Municipal Arborists presented Ian with an Award of Achievement for his contributions to our field. Richard W. Harper is an Extension Assistant Professor of Urban & Community Forestry in the UMass Department of Environmental Conservation. An ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and Connecticut Licensed Arborist, Rick has over 15 years combined green industry experience both as a field technician and in Cornell University's Extension Horticulture Program. He serves as the Massachusetts State Representative on the ISA New England Chapter Board of Directors. Ian Hanou Matthew Wells holds a Master's Degree in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry and a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Management. He is a Chartered Arboriculturist and ISA Certified Arborist. Previous to his current position as Santa Monica, CA Urban Forester, he was the Director of Tree Preservation for NYC Parks, and prior to that was a Tree Officer at the Central London Borough of Camden. Matt has present- ed papers and workshops at urban forestry conferences globally and is a past Trustee of the Tree Research and Education Endowment (TREE) Fund.
