Several persons were arrested in the past few months for selling fake Mighty and Marvels cigarettes including a certain Arnel Contado in Quezon, Isabela province, who was nabbed by barangay officials in a public market. US Oklahoma Recycles Butts Oklahoma City has has a new way of dealing with the unstoppable tide of cigarette butts polluting its sidewalks and clogging its storm drains — turn them into plastic. It's a little more complex than that, but a number of organizations have joined forces to install 23 cigarette recycling stations on light poles in downtown Oklahoma City. The new aluminum boxes will serve as collection points for filters and other tobacco products, and the non-profit group Downtown OKC will send it all to "a private company" for recycling. Though a city administration press release didn't specify which company that would be, one company has been basking in attention for its program recycling used cigarettes into plastic and composting material. That company, TerraCycle, has made headlines for turning cigarette filters into feedstock for products ranging from benches to backpacks. According to a 2009 study from Keep America Beautiful, tobacco products are the most common type of litter on U.S. roadways. India Static Message Proposed The Censor board in India is in its revamp mode it seems. The Shyam Benegal committee is trying hard to revamp Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the latest change that they are all set to bring is to replace the anti-smoking ads and tickers with just one static message at the beginning of the film. According to the committee, the tickers and the message in between the movies break the "narrative of the film". The major changes that the Shyam Benegal committee has proposed are as follows: 1. The committee has suggested screening of only one "meaningful static warning", that would be made with standard visuals. It has to be approved by the health ministry against tobacco use and smoking at the start of the film. 2. For better anti-smoking films, the Benegal committee, that consists of artists like Kamal Haasan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, and Piyush Pandey have suggested that small films with popular actors should replace the current anti-smoking films. These big actors who will be a part of these awareness films, playing characters that smoke on the screen will help in spreading the message to a large number of people. The second part of the report of the 8-member committee was submitted to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting recently. "Vapers want common sense regulations to ensure consumer protection and product standards. But what they fear is overregulation, which would stifle product access and innovation." – Adam Kustin, vice president of marketing at V2.
