17 Oil Prophets Steve has found his work in the Scottsboro Rotary club to be personally satisfying. Through the program DEAR day (Drop Everything And Read) the club has had the opportunity to give a book to every student in each of the elementary schools. The club has also influenced three elementary schools to adopt Stephen Covey's 7 Habits with great results. Steve says it is remarkable "when you walk up to the front door of an Elementary School and a 2nd or 3rd grader welcomes you to the School by shaking your hand." Steve is a graduate of Leadership Alabama, a networking organization that gives members across the state support as they work individually and together towards making a better Alabama. Steve is a founding member of Leadership Jackson County, as well as participating in the Leadership Alabama Regional Council. The members of Leadership Alabama take part in education programs in Montgomery and around the state. Each year the Adult Leadership Jackson County and the Youth Leadership Jackson county join them for a day to get a close-up view of state government in action. In 2006 he was strongly encouraged to run, but it wasn't the right time or place. In 2010 he realized a seat might be opening in the State Senate, and he decided it was time to get involved. He began fundraising, and assembled a solid team with a strong game plan. In 2014, he entered his first political race. He won the primary and then moved on to a friendly race against his friend, Democrat Horace Clemens. Sadly, 30 days before the primary election Steve's wife, Sandra passed away after a battle with lung cancer. She had encouraged him to stay in the race, and in November 2014, Steve won the Senate District 8 seat representing all of Jackson County as well as parts of Madison and DeKalb counties. As a senator, Steve says "You do things to help constituents in your district. We have passed a lot of local bills to help our municipalities." In 2015 he received the Legislator of the Year Award from the Pediatric Association for working with them to pass a graduated driver's license for teenagers, requiring young drivers to gain additional hours of experience before getting their license. Last spring, a young man who had lost his hearing due to domestic violence brought a petition with over 1200 signatures to a house member in DeKalb county. As a result, Steve says, "We passed a domestic violence tag bill that when someone buys the domestic violence tag that money goes to the DA of that Particular County to help fight domestic violence in that county." Steve continues, "We called the victim's mother to tell her as soon as we passed the bill- she literally broke down crying!" It makes you fill good! Steve and Sandra have four children and nine grandchildren. His daughter, Laura Ann lives in Hoover, AL, with her husband Drew, a police officer, and their 3 children. Laura is a teacher by trade, but is taking the year off to be home with nearly 2-year-old twins. The couple also has a 5-year-old daughter. Steve's son, Jager, is a chemical engineer with Exxon Mobile in Houston, TX. Chrissie and her husband live on the west coast with their 4 children, Amy, and her husband Zack have a 9-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter. In his free time, Steve likes to spend time outdoors. His father has a small herd of commercial cattle on a nearby farm. Steve also enjoys hunting and spending on the beautiful Tennessee River. State Senator Steve Livingston is a member of P&CMA and a Chevron Marketer in North Alabama.
