This year, the skiing won't be the only draw: Olympia Scarry and Neville Wakefield are once again dotting the slopes with art for Elevation 1049. Opening in February, the multi-venue exhibition will include works by Nicole Wermers, Sarah Morris and Thomas Schütte, among others. ELEVATION1049.ORG Anthony James elevates his aura for a new site-specific show in Malibu, opening in January. Here, he discusses the series, with its distinctive California cues: "When I got back to Los Angeles two years ago, I got really into meditation and Kundalini yoga, and I started thinking about gravitational fields and auras and began making these sculptural works that are in the shape of a magnetic field. I made certain egg- shaped shields gesturing toward a human aura and others that are circular and more like cosmos with planets and stars. In the new year, I'm going to show a few of them and some freestanding ebony totems, curated by Lauri Firstenberg, at the Malibu ranch of Eric Lloyd Wright, the grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright. The artwork looks ancient but also futuristic, and that's what this architecture feels like, as well. It's not abandoned—it was started in 1978— but he just never finished it. I want this exhibition to feel like a landscape/seascape within this crazy, sci-fi architecture." ANTHONYJAMESSTUDIO.COM In November, San Francisco-based gallery Altman Siegel opened the door to its new space in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood with a group show featuring the gallery's complete roster, from Sara VanDerBeek to Trevor Paglen. Next up in January, Laeh Glenn will present new large-scale paintings and sculptures that further the artist's interest in genre by addressing the traditions and tropes of painting.
