Schedule your service now. Oregon Continued from page 47 Races where Dachshunds run their little hearts out and there's a good selection of rental homes to choose from right on the beach. There's just no way to visit here without taking the 15-mile ride over to the town of Tillamook to sample the wares of the state's most famous cheese factory. From tastings to dining it's an opportunity to add to your waistline but the place simply cannot be missed. From Tillamook, you can pick up OR-131 west to head out to see the decommissioned Cape Meares Lighthouse. At only 38 feet high, Cape Meares is known as the shortest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. The 12-mile route is pretty rough and the twisties are serious so it's slow going but the views afford some great photos. From there, the next stop was the historical seaside town of Astoria where the Columbia River meets the sea. The distance between Rockaway Beach and Astoria is a scant 50 miles but the roads get wider and better paved. Established in 1811 and incor- porated in 1876, Astoria holds the distinction of having the fi rst U.S. Post Offi ce west of the Mississippi. Dripping with great history and local lore, we found the town charming but expensive. There's plenty of nearby camping available and the weather is agreeable for tenting since summers are mild with the lightest rainfall between July and August. The Astoria-Megler Bridge, the longest span in the nation at an impressive 1,232 feet, crosses the Columbia River and linked the town with Washington state back in 1966. Our favorite local lunch spot was a boat on a trailer sitting on the side of the road. No kidding. The Bowpicker Fish & Chips only serves fried, fresh- caught tuna and chips and they only take cash. There are a couple of picnic tables and a long line that moves pretty fast. It's reasonably priced considering the area. If bare bones, sitting on your bike to eat is what you're looking for, jump in line. If you want cushy, keep going since there are plenty of the tour- isty-type breweries and chowder houses near the riverfront. Once you've had your fi ll of coastal views and seaside shanties, if that's even possible, it's a mere 50 miles or so inland to I-5 north or south where you can easily pick up the super- slab and head back to reality to plot out the next dream ride. See ya out there. 4
