Researchers will discuss studies on pest resistance W in apple, demonstrate and share data on a solid-set canopy pesticide delivery system, discuss mechanical versus chemical thinning, and give an update on an apple replant study. New this year is an opportunity for growers and other participants to try various hands-on exercises before the main field-day activities. During a biocon- trol workshop, participants will learn how to identify and monitor natural enemies, how they are affected by pesticides, and how to scout for pests and identify invasive insects. A tour and discussion of weed control using new herbicides will be led by Tim Smith, WSU extension tree fruit specialist. Workshop and weed control activities begin at 4:00 p.m. with the field day presentations from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner will follow in the Sunrise equipment com- pound, with a dedication of new facilities provided by a donation from Northwest Farm Credit Services. The workshops are free, but participants should e- mail pmtp.info@wsu.edu or call (509) 663-8181 by August 16 to indicate which workshop they plan to attend.
