Not only do college graduates earn more over their lifetimes and have more satisfaction in their careers, they are also healthier, have stronger families, volunteer more, and are more engaged in the civic and cultural life of their communities. Put Yourself in the Picture A college education is more important than ever before, and it is becoming No one has ever seriously argued that a college education is for everyone. However, given the economic, cultural, and civic values of a college education, the 23 private, nonprofit institutions of higher learning in the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) are absolutely committed to the ideal that everyone should have the opportunity for a college education. This is more than just a platitude. Picture this: n Wisconsin's private, nonprofit colleges and universities have been keeping out-of-pocket costs manageable for students and their families. For the third year in a row, net tuition (full tuition minus financial aid) has been under $5,000. In fact, the 2010-11 net tuition of $4,888 is 16% lower than it was in 2006-07. n Approximately 99% of WAICU's full-time first-time students receive financial aid, averaging $20,446 a year. n The average class size at a Wisconsin private, nonprofit college or university is just 17 students. n Attending a private, nonprofit college or university increases your opportunity to graduate in four years, to study abroad, to be personally involved in sports, community service, and other collegiate activities. Even with all of this caring and commitment, there is still one element missing: YOU! You need to put yourself in the picture, to embrace the opportunities, and to pursue your dreams. Your family, your community, your schools, and these colleges and universities want you to succeed. This annual Guide to Admission and Financial Aid describes the opportunities available to you at Wisconsin's private, nonprofit colleges and universities. Consider each university and ask, "Can I see myself at this college or this university?" Use our interactive website, PrivateCollegeZone.org, to match up your background, skills, abilities, and interests with these colleges. Participate in Wisconsin Private College Week, July 8-13, 2013. Many assert that we miss opportunities in life because of a failure of imagination, a failure to "see" ourselves and our capabilities in different situations. So, once again, I urge you to "put yourself in the picture." Smile! Rolf Wegenke WAICU president
