FROM THE EDITOR It's Good to be Weird While in Portland for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Conference and Show Aug. 12-14, one of the first things I noticed was a building featuring a huge painted sign that read, "Keep Portland Weird." It was quickly apparent that Portlanders embrace that philosophy. The city was a showcase for the eclectic, the eccentric, and, yes, the down- right "weird." Portland has more food trucks lining its streets than it has fast food restaurants; the most popular dining establishment in town is Voodoo Doughnut; and the city is home to the fully automated, coin-operated church of Elvis. This odd metropolis situated in the beautiful Pacific Northwest was definitely a unique and memorable locale for the 2012 ISA event. As for the conference and show, there were some memorable moments as well. Awards of Distinction During this year's event, ISA announced the winners of the 2012 Awards of Distinction, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts. The hon- orees included: • Dr. H. Dennis P. Ryan, Award of Merit; • Susan Murray, Excellence in Arboriculture Education; • Dr. Tom Smiley, Excellence in Arboriculture Education; • Pedro Mendes Castro, Award of Achievement; • Thomas Mugridge, Honorary Life Membership; • Dr. Michael Raupp, Author's Citation; • Dr. Jason Grabosky, Arboriculture Research; • Tobe Sherrill, Exceptional Contribution to Practical Arboriculture; and • Dr. P. Eric Wiseman, Early Career Scientist Award. "True Professionals of Arboriculture" ISA also selected five arborists for the 2012 class of "True Professionals of Arboriculture": William Logan, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Tim Kastning, Hayden, Idaho; Bruce Kreitler, Abilene, Texas; Donald Picker, Fanling, Hong Kong; and Robert Springer, Charlottesville, Va. International Tree Climbing Championship The 2012 International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) was also held in Portland. The 2012 ITCC World Champions are Beddes Strasser of Germany in the Men's competition and Veronika Ericsson of Sweden in the Women's competition. Initially, Portland seemed like an odd choice of locale for the event. But Portland proved that, sometimes, "weird" can be pretty good. 626 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 500 Los Angeles, CA 90017 213-596-7226 Bruce Loria bloria@m2media360.com 1030 W.
