Was Martin right?) • Ernie Els, while sitting on the clubhouse patio after his Sunday round and chatting with anyone who sat down with him, said, "Fescue is the future. These young guys hit it so far that if they stray from the fairway they should be punished." It's interesting to watch the Asian media when they have access to a player from that part of the world. They swarm and you'd better not get in their way because they're serious and hardworking about getting the story. Plus, they're courteous and respectful, bowing to their fellow journalists and to the interviewee. The U.S. Open's unsung heroes were the 5,000 volunteers (70% Wisconsinites) who withstood 90 degrees, almost cloudless skies and high humidity for most of the week. Can you imagine sitting in an open farm field that is far, far from any golf action every day AND directing traffic in those conditions? Well, these volunteers did it with aplomb and smiles. Without them, there would be no tournaments for the Dustin Johnsons, Jordan Spieths or Rickie Fowlers of the world. After the second round on Friday in 90 degrees and bright sun, popular English golfer Andrew "Beef" Johnston came out to one of the busier walkways at Erin Hills and signed autographs, talked with spectators and joked about his nickname. His sponsor's (Arby's: "We have the meats!") rep was standing nearby and I said to him: "Golf could use a few more classy characters like the 'Beef.'" The rep replied: "Life could use a few more like him." Amen.
