SAFETY WATCH Solid Blocking Tackle safety risks by properly blocking equipment and machinery from motion. compiled by Therese Dunphy, Editor-in-Chief From 2000 to 2009, there were 23 fatalities in metal/non- metal mines due to failure to block against motion. These accidents occurred in both surface and underground mines. Miners were fatally injured when performing maintenance without first blocking machinery or equipment against motion, allowing a component to fall or lower unexpected- ly; when using inadequate materials for blocking; and when failing to block components of process equipment against movement during repair. Failure-to-block citations are perennially among the frequently cited violations of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards. Risk assessment — studying the task at hand and asking what potential outcomes may be — is a necessary part of safe work practices. Consider the following recommendations for proper blocking.
