product focus | by Wayne Grayson Machine enhancements CUSTOM EXCAVATOR DEPTH CONTROL AGL's new EZ Dig Pro is a real-time depth control system for excavators and backhoes. The system allows the operator to dig a fixed depth or slope without ground assistance thanks to precise grade control. Solar-powered sensors mounted on the excavator are calibrated to the machine and mea- sure the movement and angle of the bucket, boom, and dipper allowing the operator to continuously monitor depth control on the in-cab display. The in- cab LCD control box and see-through display panel allow the operator to watch the ditch, bucket, and display in the same view. Because no welding is required, the EZ Dig Pro can be installed and cali- brated by any operator in 45 minutes or less. Before the first job with the device, make sure at least one person on the crew is familiar with it and is comfort- able and confident in their ability to set up and main- tain it. Sometimes it's helpful to designate a person with a general interest in similar technology with this responsibility. Regardless, don't wait until the day the job begins to begin using a GPS reference device. It's a good idea to take the device on a practice run by setting it up on a machine in order to verify that all of the on-site benchmarks have been correctly calibrated. For those still on the fence about such a device, talk to peers in the industry to learn the types of returns fellow contractors are seeing on this investment.
