BLOODY KNUCKLES By Peter D. DuPre Like A Candle In The Darkness O ne of the funny things about life is that you don't know what you will until it is gone. This particularly holds true for the everyday conveniences of modern life, such as lights. Here in the Up- per Left Hand Corner, we often get power outages because the local trash trees – alder – have an alarm- ing habit of falling over onto power lines every time the wind blows stronger than 20 mph. While I don't much like being without power, I deal with it. I buy block ice in town and store perishables in a 20-gallon lights, candles and kerosene lamps on hand so I don't have to stumble around in the dark. However, when the lights go out so prepared. Sure, every once in a while I'll replace a burned out head- lamp, but until a couple of weeks 50 CHANGING LANES // MARCH '12 ago, I never had any problems that just knocked out the lights for good. And as per usual, it happened on some lonely road in the back of the county. My friend, Mike, and I were rare and interesting car that has been parked and forgotten in some farmer's barn. Mike and I try to scour barns in our area on a regular basis, hoping that we will discover some rare Ferrari, old Indy racecar, or other potentially valuable vehicle. I read about guys all the time who Cords. As for Mike and me… well, bales of moldy straw, and buckets of bent nails and crates of used Mason jars.
