CAPITOL HILL REPORT MIT Selected by U.S. Department of Transportation to Lead New England Consortium on Transportation Safety & Livable Communities T he Engineering Systems Divi- sion's Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL) is pleased to announce that MIT has been selected to lead the U.S. Depart- ment of Transportation Research & Innovative Technology Administra- tion (RITA) University Transporta- tion Center for the New England Region. The University Transporta- tion Centers Program strives to advance research and education programs that address critical transportation challenges facing our nation. The UTCs, which are lo- cated throughout the United States, conduct research that directly supports the priorities of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the participating universities are a 50 CHANGING LANES // APRIL '12 critical part of the nation's transpor- tation strategy. Announced Tuesday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the two-year $3.5 mil- lion grant funds transportation and education programs at MIT and its regional partners that include the University of Connecticut, Harvard University, and the Universities of Maine and Massachusetts. CTL's Joseph Coughlin, also director of the AgeLab, led the proposal and is principal investigator of the grant establishing the New England University Transportation Center.
