Hoyt Arboretum Curator Martin Nicholson (left of center, in brown hat) gave SMAers a tour of Hoyt Arboretum's gymnosperm collection. SMAers also learned about Portland's Heritage Tree Program, whereby trees of significant age, size, history, or type can be nominated to the City Forester for protection. The program started in 1994 and there are now more than 300 Heritage Trees in the City, 12 about half of which are on public land, half on private. Finally, Larry Maginnis discussed the maintenance challenges posed by preserv- ing Portland's numerous, cherished view cor- ridors. Thank you, Larry and colleagues, for organizing a superb tour day!
