Etiolation (light deprivation) aids in plant propagation. Here, shade protects the delicate etiolated shoots until they are ready for cut- ting. help, we took moisture readings under those bags to measure independently whether the homeowners did in fact water. We are finishing up the data collection now on three different species of trees, some planted in spring, some in fall (to garner yet more information). In the end we'll get insight into barriers to watering or lack of watering's impact on trees by species and season of transplanting. Another community oriented project is being done by our post-doc, Fred Cowett, who coordinates our SWAT (Student Weekend Arborist Team) program whereby municipalities can get street tree inventories done afford- ably by supervised CU students and Master Gardeners. Fred has taken the street tree inventory data from 142 New York municipalities from the Adirondacks to Long Island, and has worked out a model that can extrapolate statewide numbers from that sample of 142. It's been successful enough that New Jersey and Pennsylvania would like to use the model to get a handle on their statewide urban tree population. www.urban-forestry.com 27
