Vieira, 48, a local tanker driver for Connell Transport of Hamilton, Ontario, said he was "put in the right place at the right time" last year when he was detoured from his daily routine and heard a crash. "I put my left hand on this un- fortunate person's neck, because he had been pierced by a broken steer- ing wheel through the right side of his neck," he said. Vieira said he has no formal training in assisting trauma victims and that he heard from the re department after the crash that the driver survived the incident. "The only training that I would associate to this is just experience," he said. "I've seen a lot, so it's probably made it easier to jump in without having to hesitate. I gave it no thought." A SELF-DRIVING UBER prototype car struck and killed a pedestrian March 19 in Tempe, Arizona, prompting the company to suspend its autonomous pilot program taking place in a few cities.
