A hurricane
brings out the
best of the
industry
Sandy swept across the
East Coast leaving devastation
in its wake. The loss of life was
fortunately limited, but the disruption
to lives and the damage to property and
infrastructure were significant. As this
column is being printed, many people
still await a return to even a semblance
of normalcy. One area hit hard was the
fuel supply infrastructure.
With motor fuels there was a return to
the gas lines and even/odd rationing of
the 1970s. Of course, to some extent this
was also related to the misfiring of wellmeaning price gouging laws and the
resultant hording behavior. A lot of people
absolutely needing a gallon of gasoline or
diesel would have been happy to have one
to purchase even at twice or triple the normal price. And a lot of people had cans of
fuel filling their garage they never had need
to use before the supply situation eased.
With heating fuels, you had not only
a fuel supply disruption, but damage to
heating appliances and the contamination
of existing household fuelall as winter
was making its presence known.

While the impact of the storm
featured an unfortunate number of
incidents showing the dark side of
humanity, it also featured some of the
best of the human spirit. And, our industry has a lot to be proud of where that
is concerned. Charlie Bursey touches
on that in his column this month. And
Steve Bennets article on page 16 highlights some of the exceptional efforts
undertaken by the industry to get fuel
moving to both heating oil customers
and motorists and to get the heating
appliance repairs started. One lingering
take away from this event should be how
important relationships and personalized service are where really critical
needs like heat are concerned.
At a time of so much uncertainty at
home and aboard we can go into the holiday season feeling a bit better not only
about our profession (on top of the many
other things to be proud of), but about the
human condition itself. From the magazine staff to its readerswell done folks.
And a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah
and Happy New Year to all. l F O N
