live at home Transformative Tricks Turn a shabby eyesore into an eye-catching element of your home using decorative Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan and tips courtesy of Cindy Gazso, co-owner of Stoughton's Studio 184 Rustic: Sometimes a vintage touch is just what a room or patio needs. With this technique, says Gazso, "you can take a new piece of wood and make it look like it came out of a barn." Brush the paint on thick directly from the can, creating texture that suggests a time gone by. Modern: The studio's most popular technique, this smooth finish creates polished statement pieces for any room. Choose a bold color, whether Barcelona Orange or Château Grey, add some water to thin the paint, then apply two coats and you've got a contemporary look that's sure to turn heads. Dry brush: It takes two to tango—and two complementary paint colors to form the perfect finish. Dip a dry brush into the paint can and wipe almost all of the paint off the brush until only a soft hint remains. Then gently sweep the color onto a dry base coat for a subtle but elegant effect. 22 BRAVA Magazine July 2013 Two-colored distress: Bring out the datails of your piece with a two-tone finish. Let one coat of your first color dry before brushing on a different color to completely obscure the first. Then rub sandpaper or a wet towel on the surface until the bottom layer peeks through.
