Four Questions for Every Professional Applying to an MBA Program By Linda Uitvlugt The choice to return to school while working full time is rarely an individual one. It affects those around you—your family, friends, and employer will also be impacted by your decision. Yet, pursuing a part-time MBA can allow you to move up in your career without pressing pause for two years. Here are four key questions to ask as you explore your options: 1. Is the part-time MBA experience the right fit for me? Pursuing your MBA requires a time, energy, and financial commitment. We encourage you to talk extensively with your family, support system, and employer about how work and home responsibilities might change, along with the benefits of an MBA. 2. Does the program include an international experience? An MBA global experience gives you the opportunity to learn how business is conducted in another country, while giving you the opportunity to explore different industries and cultures. 3. What type of support services will be available? Chances are you are thinking about an MBA because you want to move up at your company or make a major career change. Make sure your program has individual career services and meaningful networking opportunities to help you meet your goals. 4. What amenities does the program include? In order for you to balance work, home, and school you need to have a schedule that runs smoothly and doesn't require you to sweat the details. Look for a program that provides helpful amenities such as complimentary meals, parking, academic materials, teleconference services and transportation. The decision to return to school is an exciting opportunity to expand your horizons. Take full advantage by asking the right questions before you make this important decision. Linda Uitvlugt is the Director of Admissions, Evening and Executive MBA programs at the University of WisconsinMadison, Wisconsin School of Business. 32 BRAVA Magazine July 2013
